Why Materials Matter in Kids Clothing

The materials used in kids clothing play an important role in comfort, durability and style. Choosing the right kids clothing materials is also essential when thinking about the impact clothing has on the world and the environment.

At MARU+BO we believe sustainable kids clothing should be comfortable, durable and environmentally responsible. Our customers are children, and they will experience the effects of the choices we make today as they grow up. Our responsibility is not only to create great clothing now but also to protect the environment for future generations.

Our goal is to design eco friendly kids clothing that supports everyday childhood adventures while respecting the planet.

Benefits of Cotton for Kids Clothing

Most pieces in our small capsule collection of sustainable kidswear are made from OEKO TEX certified cotton clothing. Cotton is a natural fiber that is soft, breathable, comfortable and hypoallergenic, which makes it ideal for cotton kids clothing.

Breathable cotton kids clothing is especially important for children because it allows the skin to breathe and keeps kids comfortable throughout the day. Cotton is also biodegradable and renewable, making it one of the most widely used sustainable materials for kids clothing.

The OEKO TEX Standard 100 certification ensures that the cotton used in our garments is produced without harmful chemicals, which makes it a safe choice for children’s skin.

Cotton does have a few minor limitations. It takes longer to dry and because it is highly breathable it is not always the best option for certain pieces such as winter jackets or technical outerwear.

Natural vs Technical Fabrics for Kidswear

When designing garments we try to balance natural materials and technical fabrics to support everyday play and outdoor activities.

For technical performance in pieces such as winter outerwear we incorporate polyester fibers where they make sense. This gives garments waterproof, windproof, tear resistant, lightweight and quick drying qualities that are ideal for outdoor play and changing weather conditions.

Combining natural fabrics with technical materials helps create sustainable kidswear that is both practical and durable.

Choosing Sustainable Materials for Kidswear

Some garments include a small percentage of polyester on the outer layer to create the melange effect, the soft speckled grey look that adds visual texture to the collection. This effect comes from blending fibers of different colors or shades.

Cotton alone can sometimes appear flat and may wrinkle or shrink more easily. By adding a small amount of polyester to the outer layer, the fabric keeps its color and texture better and creates a more even appearance. The side that touches the skin remains made entirely of cotton, ensuring comfort and a natural feel for children.

This combination improves durability, shape retention and ease of washing without compromising comfort.

By combining natural and technical fibers in thoughtful ways, MARU+BO creates sustainable kids clothing that is comfortable, functional, visually appealing and environmentally responsible. Our approach focuses on creating eco friendly kids clothing that fits naturally into a modern and sustainable kids wardrobe.
